Last fall, on a hunting trip, my husband was introduced to a new game, Wizard. Wizard is a card game, a bit like spades, with a few twists thrown in.
There a four wizards in the deck that can trump and trump and then there are four jesters which mean you automatically lose, a bit like playing nillo. The game is progressively dealt, meaning you receive 1 card in the first hand, 2 in the second, and so on.
You score by making your bid. And only your bid. So for each round, there are a possible 1 trick for the first hand, 2 tricks for the second hand. If you make your bid, you receive positive points, if you go over or under you lose points.
Our family loves playing this game. Once you play a hand or two you really get it.
So I took the game to a client meeting last week. Why does this Dallas, Tx Business Coach bring a game to a client? My clients have been working very hard to build their business, in fact they have seen 205% growth in the last 4 months. There have been ups and downs, but the last couple of weeks had been challenging – they needed a little fun & perspective.
As we are playing, my client gets excited because he feels like he knows this game, and as each hand goes by he realizes that as he’s playing – some of his skills come in handy, but he also needs to learn the nuances of this game. About hand 6, a knowing comes over his eyes.
Here’s the trick to Wizard – it is a game that is part strategy, part chance; or as my client put it, “It’s like being in business.”
I often look at business as a game, a game to be won with a lot of strategy and a little bit of chance. Do you see it that way?
The skills you have that make you good at the work of the business will take you far.
At times, there are skills you need to learn.
At times, you need someone to show you how to play for a few hands so you pick it up more quickly than if you tried to figure it out on your own.
